Tainan, Taiwan – GlobalTop Technology, manufacturer of consumer grade GPS modules, has announced today that its new firmware customization suite designed specifically for asset management applications is now available for their lineup of GPS modules based on the latest MediaTek chipset. These customizations include “Last Position Retention”, “Distance Calculation” and most interestingly “Geofencing”, which marks the first time such function ever featured inside a GPS module.

Through Geofencing, asset tracking hardware designers can easily implement a virtual circular perimeter by giving the module a set of coordinate that marks the center of perimeter, along with the length of radius which defines the size of area which the geofencing zone covers. The GPS module will then intelligently informs the host processor through serial protocol whether or not if the current position is outside or inside the geofencing zone.

The other two firmware customization services are also designed to further lighten calculation load on host processors in the asset tracking hardware. Last position retention allows the GPS module to retain and output last known position in the standard NMEA0183 protocol after losing GPS satellite fix. Whereas distance calculation enables the GPS module to internally calculate distances between multiple points of interest, making it a popular feature in GPS data logging applications.

These three new customizations: Geofencing, Last Position Retention and Distance Calculation, together with a host of other useful tailor made firmware functions are designed to make implementing GPS function as easy and as efficient as possible. They are now available for selected GlobalTop GPS modules.
